The German midfielder is expected to play a big part this season and David O'Leary is keen to tie him down to a fresh contract.
Bayern Leverkusen have been interested in the Under-21 international and O'Leary is keen to keep him at Villa Park.
"I think Thomas surprised a lot of people with how well he played last year," O'Leary told the club's website.
"I think we've got his agent coming over next week. I've mentioned it to Thomas this pre-season that we want to address his contract."
Villa have already signed the likes of Gareth Barry, Juan Pablo Angel and Olof Mellberg on new contracts.
The Swedish stopper was quick to pledge his future to the club after Euro 2004, saying that he hoped it was the start of big things for the club.
"I believe we can be even better than last season, we have the potential to finish in the top five," Mellberg told TT.
"Just as well as winning titles, I feel it's great there from the start as we aim to establish ourselves as a top side.
"I strongly believe in this side, otherwise I wouldn't have signed."
