David O'Leary has challenged Thomas Hitzlsperger to be more consistent.Aston Villa boss David O'Leary has challenged Thomas Hitzlsperger to produce his best on a consistent basis.
The German international has failed to hold down a regular place in the first team this season and O'Leary is demanding he proves himself again.
"I think Thomas is having to come to terms with the 'second season' thing and the big factor of expectations," said O'Leary.
"People know he is better player now and are expecting more of him.
"All of those things he has got to contend with and that's what he is going through.
"You see a lot of people burst on the scene, do great initially but they say it's the following year that you back it up and I think he has been going through a little bit of that.
"People are expecting Thomas to do more and he has got to contend with that as a young person."
Meanwhile, Villa chairman Doug Ellis is remaining calm over the fact that O'Leary has still to sign his new deal.
Both men shook hands on a new deal last month, but O'Leary has still to put pen-to-paper on the contract.
Ellis is not worried and is confident it will all be done soon.
"We shook hands on a deal five or so weeks ago and there are certainly no worries on my part that it will not be concluded," said Ellis.
