Bremen chase Hitzlsperger

Werder Bremen have confirmed that they are interested in Thomas Hitzlsperger.

Bundesliga champions Werder Bremen have confirmed that they are interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger.

The 22-year-old is out of contract in the summer and Villa are desperate to hold onto him, although Bremen sport director Klaus Allofs has revealed that the German outfit are sniffing around the player.

"The situation with Hitzlsperger is similar to that of [Bayer Leverkusen's] Bernd Schneider," Allofs told Syker Kreiszeitung.

"When a German international's contract expires, it goes without saying that we are interested."

For his part the Villa man has admitted that a move to the Bundesliga would be highly attractive, particularly for the chance to make national boss Jurgen Klinsmann take note of his performances.

"Bremen is a good club and they would give me the chance to play myself into the reckoning for the 2006 World Cup," said Hitzlsperger.

"One doesn't have to say anything about the qualities of Werder Bremen, I could imagine moving there."

This latest news will be sure to come as a blow to Villa boss David O'Leary who rates the player highly and already has one of the smallest squads in the Premiership.
