Burnley have snapped up Aston Villa's Peter Whittingham on loan.Burnley have snapped up England Under-21 international Peter Whittingham on a month's loan from Aston Villa.
David O'Leary has surprisingly let the winger go out on loan to gain first team experience, after finding himself on the periphery of the Villa squad.
O'Leary has been impressed with the treatment of another loanee - Gary Cahill - who has been a major hit at Turf Moor since leaving Villa Park.
Whittingham is Villa's current young player of the year, and is one game shy of his 50th appearance for the Premiership outfit.
Burnley boss Steve Cotterill had hinted at new arrivals this week, but was keen to keep the identity of the players in question under wraps for fear of other clubs hijacking the deals.
"We're delighted to add an England Under 21 international to the squad and we wish him all the best," Cotterill told the club's official website.
"We trained at Aston Villa on Friday and that gave us chance to have a chat with David O'Leary and Roy Aitken about him."
"David got back to me at 8.30am and gave us the go ahead to take him on loan.
"It's initially for a month, but we'll sit down after that and maybe extend it.
"If he can come in and do the same as Gary Cahill, he'll be an excellent signing."
Whittingham has scored once this season for Villa - grabbing the opener in a 3-0 win against Portsmouth in November, but has yet to feature for The Villains in 2005.
A further boost for Burnley will be the news that Whittingham has yet to play in the FA Cup this season - so will be available for the derby Fifth Round tie against Blackburn Rovers.
