Aston Villa boss David O'Leary has savaged Liam Ridgewell.Aston Villa boss David O'Leary has savaged Liam Ridgewell for his actions which led to his dismissal against West Brom on Sunday, but hopes the young defender learns from the experience.
Villa were hanging onto a lead when Ridgewell and Baggies midfielder Jonathan Greening were dismissed after clashing heads in the middle of the park.
West Brom went on to claim a point and O'Leary did not hide his disgust when asked about the incident.
"I thought our fella deserved to be sent off, I can't condone that," he told Sky Sports News. "I'm totally disgusted and disappointed with him.
"If you stick your head in somebody's face you deserve to get it.
"I am struggling for centre halves with Mellberg out and I lose him for three games now.
"He's let us down badly and I hope he learns from it.
"People have instant reactions but that does nothing for us with the centre backs we have out."
O'Leary believes the 90 minutes were a microcosm of Villa's season.
"It sums our season up, doing daft things," he added. "We should have wrapped the game up in the first half and we came out a shadow of ourselves and gave away a stupid goal at the end."
The one shining light for O'Leary was the return to goalscoring form of Darius Vassell who looked close to his menacing best on Sunday.
"I thought he was getting back to his best," said O'Leary. "He was fantastic up front, looked sharp, worked hard and that is the Vassell I want to see."
