The Danish shot-stopper has 12 months left on his current three-year deal at Villa Park, and the manager believes he should be offered an extension.
"I'd like Thomas to stay and I've said that I want him to stay because he has proved himself to be a good solid performer for Villa," said O'Leary.
"He has said that he wants to sign a new contract and I hope the club can take him up on what he has said. I would recommend that to happen.
"Of course, whenever a keeper has a little dodgy spell, it is highlighted but after two seasons with us I am satisfied with his contribution.
"When I came here, we needed a keeper and we bought someone at a sensible price who can be a good asset to this club over many seasons."
Former Sunderland keeper Sorensen said that he would be keen to remain with the club if offered a new deal.
"I know that there is talk about a new deal," said Sorensen.
"I've told the manager that I am happy to stay here and hopefully it will get sorted.
"I want to focus on the football and have a good finish to the current season but I do enjoy it at Villa and if I can stay, then I will gladly stop."
