Villa boss David O'Leary has been granted substantial transfer funds in a bid to build a squad capable of challenging for European football and has identified the French defender as a key target.
The 27-year-old enjoyed an impressive season as Stuart Pearce nearly led City to Uefa Cup football, and Villa have reportedly tabled a £5.5 million bid for the Paris Saint Germain star.
After the player's agent revealed that Villa were interested, Ellis has now confirmed that, at a meeting of the Premier League bosses, he approached his Manchester City counterpart John Wardle regarding Distin.
"I've just been with the other 19 Premiership chairman and chief executives and it would be dishonest to say I didn't talk to Manchester City about Sylvain Distin," said Ellis.
It is believed that a bid of around £6.5 million could be enough to prise Distin from Eastlands.
