Aston Villa have fielded an approach from Espanyol for midfielder Mathieu Berson.Aston Villa have fielded an approach from Espanyol for French midfielder Mathieu Berson.
The 25-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Villa Park since a £1.6 million switch from Nantes last summer.
He made a total of just 13 appearances last term as he struggled to adapt to life in The Premiership.
It now appears he could be offered an escape route by Espanyol who have held a long-term interest in the former France Under-21 international.
The Catalan outfit were in for Berson when he ultimately opted to join Villa last summer, but could now get their man at the second attempt.
Villa have been quick to point out there has been no official bid from the Spaniards and, although the player is keen to move to Spain, a deal is still some way off.
"We've had an approach from Espanyol, but that's as far as this has gone so far," operations director Steve Stride told the club's official website.
"We're trying to find the best solution to suit both the player and Aston Villa.
"There has been contact with Espanyol and Mathieu is keen to go to Barcelona.
"Now we are waiting for movement from Espanyol to see if they want to pursue their interest."
Espanyol are known to be in the market for a defensive midfielder and are also closely monitoring Marseille's Brazilian star Eduardo Costa.
