Sunderland target Christian Bassila is weighing up a move to Auxerre.
Christian Bassila is weighing up a move to Auxerre rather than finalising his proposed switch to Sunderland.
Although Mick McCarthy has confirmed that he is completing a move for the French trialist, Auxerre have made a late bid for his signature.
The 27-year-old was due to put pen-to-paper at The Stadium of Light on Monday but was instead in France talking to AJA officials.
Vice-chairman Gerard Bourguoin has confirmed a deal is close to being settled with Bassila.
"There is no stumbling block," he told L'Equipe. "There are just different things to negotiate.
"Christian really wants to join us and he matches perfectly the profile we are looking for.
"The definitive decision will be made on Tuesday."
Auxerre have other candidates to reinforce their midfield with Honved's Kristian Vadocz and Aston Villa's Mathieu Berson under scrutiny.
However, Bassila is a free agent and appears to be first choice.
