David O'Leary is hopeful of fielding Thomas Sorensen against Birmingham.Aston Villa boss David O'Leary says he has no qualms about fielding Thomas Sorensen against bitter rivals Birmingham should the keeper return from injury.
Sorensen made some crucial errors as Villa lost 2-0 and 2-1 last season and will be keen to exorcise his demons in the latest Midlands derby on Sunday.
Whilst a hamstring injury may rule him out, leaving former Arsenal youngster Stuart Taylor to take his place, O'Leary is confident that Sorensen will rise to the occasion should he prove his fitness.
"Thomas would want to play," said O'Leary.
"He is a big character. He'd be turned on by actually playing.
"He'll be more determined to get fit to play because it's this big game but if he's not right, a goalkeeper with a hamstring injury, he won't play.
"I've never heard him dwell on what's gone on in the past but he's my first choice goalkeeper and if he's fit he'll play."
