David O'Leary has joked that he may need to pull on his boots again.
David O'Leary has joked that his Aston Villa squad is getting so threadbare, he may have to don his boots again.
The former Arsenal centre back has been forced to blood several youngsters with Craig Gardner the latest off the production line of talent at Villa Park to be handed a chance to impress at Premiership level.
Gardner made a competent debut in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend but O'Leary is still complaining about his shortage of numbers.
"Roy Aitken and myself might need to go back into training," he told Sky Sports.
"In all seriousness, we've got a small squad.
"Maybe people will take notice and start realising that.
"But any side I put out will try and play football, create chances and win games."
Patrik Berger's return from injury will aid O'Leary's cause but the ex-Republic of Ireland international is frustrated that he was not allowed to bring in some new players during January's transfer window.
