Aston Villa continued their indifferent pre-season preparations with a draw at Groningen.
Aston Villa continued their indifferent pre-season preparations with a 2-2 draw against Groningen.
Martin O'Neill may now be firmly installed at the helm but Villa are still struggling to find top form following another stalemate in a tour of Holland that has not seen them at their best.
Twice Villa came from behind as Luke Moore and then Liam Ridgewell etched their names on the scoresheet to earn parity for the Premiership outfit.
Groningen took the lead through a fine Evgeniy Levchenko strike from distance, only for Moore to level matters when he snapped up the rebound after seeing his own shot saved.
Danny Buijs restored Groningen's advantage just past the hour mark but it was Ridgewell that had the final say when he scored a bullet of a header in the 59th minute.
A remarkably similar game ensued in Utrecht as Charlton played out a 2-2 draw that saw Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink grab a late leveller.
Iain Dowie's Addicks were poor in the opening stages and found themselves two goals down within 18 minutes in a rain sodden Stadion Galgenwaard.
A cool finish from Cedric van der Gun gave Utrecht the lead, while Charlton's woes were then compounded as Marc-Antoine Fortune collected a short back pass to round Thomas Myhre and double his side's lead.
A headed finish from Bryan Hughes after Darren Bent's shot had been saved put Charlton back in the contest before half-time, leaving Hasselbaink to steal the plaudits when he bundled in Marcus Bent's cross with nine minutes remaining.
A strong looking Sheffield United side beat Matlock 2-0 on their travels with Neil Shipperley and Alan Quinn on the scoresheet for Neil Warnock's Blades.
Groningen 2-2 Aston Villa
Utrecht 2-2 Charlton
Matlock 0-2 Sheffield United
