Martin O'Neill is confident Stilian Petrov will now blossom in the Premiership.
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is confident Stilian Petrov will now blossom in the Premiership following his goal at Sheffield United.
Since arriving at Villa Park from Celtic, Petrov has generally impressed but having not broken his goalscoring duck prior to Monday night's draw, it has been playing on his mind.
Throughout his career Petrov has carved out a reputation for arriving from deep to get on the scoresheet and O'Neill believes that more goals will now follow.
Well aware of the Bulgarian's capabilities having also had the player at Celtic, O'Neill paid £8million to bring him to England and he remains of the opinion that such a price tag will soon be justified.
"Petrov took charge against Sheffield United and I know from his games at Celtic that he's capable of that," said O'Neill.
"It was just a wonderful performance. He started quite brightly and then the goal gave him an enormous lift.
"It was like the weight came off his shoulders in that he'd finally cracked it.
"In fairness he should have scored at West Ham on his debut - and against Watford and then Manchester City with a great free-kick that hit the bar just before half-time.
"He's a really good footballer. It was marvellous to see him do so well the other night and when he gets some real confidence about himself, he'll become even better."
