Martin O'Neill will let Gavin McCann decide if he is fit enough to face Man Utd on Saturday.
Martin O'Neill will let Gavin McCann decide if he is fit enough to face Manchester United on Saturday.
The Aston Villa midfielder failed to appear for the second half of the weekend's defeat to Bolton Wanderers due to a hamstring injury.
He is receiving treatment on the complaint and Villa boss O'Neill expects to learn by Thursday whether McCann can line up against the Premiership leaders.
"I will have a better idea on Thursday whether Gavin will be able to make it," said O'Neill.
"It's one of those sort of injuries. He's had it before and been okay.
"At other times he's had it and not been so okay, so we will see how it is later in the week.
"The one thing you know with Gavin is that if he complains about an injury, you know he's struggling. I want him to be mentally and physically right for the game.
"The fact we are going to play a lot of games in a short space of time is not a major issue. What matters is that Gavin feels he is right for the Manchester United game."
Meanwhile, O'Neill expects young midfielder Isaiah Osbourne to shortly finalise a new three-and-a-half year contract.
He added: "I think all parties are pretty happy with the contract. That will be done and dusted very soon.
"Isaiah has got potential and I am very pleased with the way he has played."
