Harewood looks set to leave West Ham after the club confirmed they would listen to offers for the striker.
A number of clubs including Birmingham, Fulham, Portsmouth and Aston Villa have expressed an interest in Harewood, but now Wigan have jumped to the head of the queue for the former Nottingham Forest man.
Wigan boss Chris Hutchings is keen to bolster his attacking options as he hopes to avoid another relegation scrap in the forthcoming campaign and he believes Harewood would be a valuable addition to his squad.
West Ham have already rejected one bid from Birmingham, but Wigan are believed to be close to meeting The Hammers' valuation of Harewood.
Harewood's representative, Mick McGuire, confirmed Wigan were leading the hunt for the player.
"Wigan have come in with a bid for Marlon and it seems the most meaningful bid," McGuire told skysports.com.
"The bid is now open to discussion between both clubs.
"Aston Villa and Birmingham are still interested, but it seems Wigan are closer to a deal.
"We are hopeful of sorting out Marlon's future in the next few days."
