The striker admits he had been considering a switch to Wigan before being contacted by Martin O'Neill over the weekend.
He is thrilled to have joined Villa and is now looking forward to competing for European qualification this season.
Harewood told Sky Sports News: "I spoke to Wigan as well, on Friday, then I had 24 hours and Martin came in late.
"It's nothing to do with money, it's football, and now I'm just looking forward to carrying on.
"Martin's looking for big things and hopefully we can take it on to another level with Europe and stuff."
O'Neill believes Harewood can bounce back from a relatively quiet season at West Ham as he has all the attributes to succeed in the Premier League.
"It happened rather quickly but I had given it some serious thought beforehand," said the Villa boss.
"Last season was not his best year but the previous two years he was pretty prolific.
"If he can recapture that sort of form we'll have a player on our hands.
"He's got a pace, he's obviously powerful and will be an asset to us."
