City and Villa tracking West Brom youngster

Skysports.com understands Premier League duo Manchester City and Aston Villa are eyeing a move for West Brom starlet Paul Downing. Downing, who is yet to break into the Baggies' first team, captains their reserve side and is highly rated at The Hawthorns. Former manager Tony Mowbray even gave the 18-year-old a place on the bench for their final Premier League clash against Blackburn Rovers last May. The promising defender has continued to develop at West Brom this season and has reportedly impressed in their FA Youth Cup. Villa will have the perfect opportunity to run the rule of his ability next month when they tackle Roberto Di Matteo's young side in the fourth round of the competition. However, while Villa are keen on keeping the youngster in the Midlands, City are believed to be leading the chase for the talented centre-half.
