Brighton & Hove Albion knocked Newcastle United out of the FA Cup for the second year in a row as Stoke City and Sunderland drew away at Championship opposition.

Aston Villa staved off a shock by overcoming Ipswich Town and Reading were also given a fright before overcoming Crawley Town away from home.

Barnsley, Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Huddersfield Town were Championship clubs to progress to the fourth round, while Aldershot Town will also be in the hat.

Newcastle endured another miserable trip to the Amex Stadium as Shola Ameobi was sent off in a 2-0 defeat by Brighton, whose goals were scored by Andrea Orlandi and substitute Will Hoskins.

Sunderland were in danger of following their local rivals out of the FA Cup, but second-half goals from Connor Wickham and Craig Gardner secured a 2-2 draw at Bolton Wanderers.

Andreas Weimann came off the bench to score an 83rd minute winner as Aston Villa recovered from a half-time deficit to beat Ipswich 2-1 at home.

Stoke were finalists in 2011, but will require a replay in their efforts towards emulating that feat following a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

Reading overcame an early scare to book a place in the FA Cup fourth round as Adam Le Fondre scored a goal in each half in a 3-1 win at Crawley Town.

Derby made light work of League One leaders Tranmere Rovers as Nigel Clough's side enjoyed a 5-0 victory at Pride Park.

Blackburn continue to thrive under caretaker manager Gary Bowyer as goals from Danny Murphy and Grant Hanley secured a 2-0 home win over Bristol City.

Jermaine Beckford scored the only goal on 11 minutes as Huddersfield won 1-0 at Championship rivals Charlton Athletic, who had Dorian Dervite sent off in the second half.

Another all-Championship affair saw Barnsley edge past Burnley 1-0 thanks to Danny Rose's 85th minute effort, with the visitors having had Brian Stock dismissed in the first half.

Danny Hylton scored a hat-trick before being sent off late on as Aldershot beat League Two rivals Rotherham United 3-1 at home.
