After Leandro Bacuna had handed Villa the lead, late goals from Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas handed the Toffees a 2-1 success at Goodison Park.
Defeat saw Villa's eight-point cushion above the relegation zone reduced to five, although they still occupy 10th place in the Premier League table.
But Lambert felt their gruelling clash against neighbours Albion cost them all three points on Merseyside.
"I thought we looked really comfortable," the Scot told Sky Sports. "Everton had one chance in the first half and hit the post and we knew it was going to be a tough game at the best of times.
"We had a really gruelling match on Wednesday night and with two days' preparation it's tough to come away from home in this league, but for 70-odd minutes we were comfortable.
"I thought it was a game that was basically played in the middle of the pitch, there wasn't much really happening at both ends.
"We've still got a decent points tally and if we keep playing the way we are we'll win more games than not.
"We'll just keep trying to build with the next target which is the team above us (Southampton)."
