Gabriel Agbonlahor is taking nothing for granted in Aston Villa's battle for Premier League survival and is looking to get to 40 points as quickly as possible.

Villa currently sit in the relative safety of mid-table, six points clear of the drop zone.

They are, however, aware that there is little margin for error with half of the division still sweating on their top flight status.

A run of one win in four means they could easily be dragged back into trouble and Agbonlahor is eager for Paul Lambert’s men to end any lingering fears regarding a relegation scrap.

He told the Birmingham Mail: “We’re on 31 points, not 40, so the fear is definitely still there.

“You never know in football. We have to keep on getting the results as early as possible and not leave it late.

“We want to pull away a bit more and try to get to that 40-point mark as quickly as we can.

“The gaffer gives us the confidence – his instructions are to go out and play freely. He doesn’t want us not to go forward and he gives us an attacking incentive. That came off against Norwich.

“Fingers crossed, we can continue to do it.”

Villa’s next outing will see them welcome table-topping Chelsea to the Midlands and Agbonlahor knows they will need to be at their best if they are to put a dent in the Blues’ title bid and aid their own quest to steer clear of danger.

He added: “We have to be on top of our performance to get anything.

“We’re looking forward to it because they are the games players want to play in.

“We have had our ups and downs this season but it’s important we take the ups from the Norwich game going into the next two home games with confidence.

“We’ve seen what we can do when we play at home at a high tempo.

“We have left it late to start getting the results at home but it has always been coming. We missed out in a few games where we’ve been unlucky.

“If you look at the Everton game we had a few chances early on and Norwich was a game where the chances started to go in for us.”
