Brad Guzan is hoping that increased competition for places at Aston Villa will lead to an improved season for Paul Lambert’s side.

Villa have finished 15th in the table in both of Lambert’s seasons as manager, while owner Randy Lerner put the club up for sale at May.

Lambert’s efforts to improve his squad have so far focused on the free transfer market, with Joe Cole, Kieran Richardson and Philippe Senderos having all pitched up at Villa Park.

However, despite the lack of resources, Guzan is feeling positive ahead of the new season and is eager to ensure the fans can be proud of the team again.

“The last few seasons haven’t been easy because we haven’t had the same resources as other clubs with bigger squads,” the United States keeper told The Sun.

“But when we are on top of our game we’re exciting to watch and capable of beating anyone.

“We have the basis of a team our fans can be proud of again. Competition raises the bar for a club and I can see that happening to us next season.”
