Andy Townsend picks the best XI that he has ever played with, including someone sat not very far from him!

Former Ireland and Aston Villa midfielder Andy Townsend picked his #One2Eleven on The Fantasy Football Club on Friday.

Townsend made 74 appearances for the Republic of Ireland, including captaining his country at the 1994 World Cup, and enjoyed a club career which included spells at Aston Villa, Chelsea, Norwich and Middlesbrough.

He won the League Cup twice with Aston Villa, in 1994 and 1996. Check out who he picked in his #One2Eleven below...

GOALKEEPER: Mark Bosnich

He was an outstanding keeper, a fabulous shot stopper... I think what hurt him was he had size 12 or 13 feet - they were like flippers! But his hands and coming for corners, he was unbelievable.

RIGHT BACK: Earl Barratt

Earl was Mr Consistency. He wasn't fussy but he was (solely) a defender and you don't see that a lot these days. Earl was very good as an out-and-out defender. I think he was an under-rated player

One of his best qualities was he understood the game. He knew what he was good at. He was quick, could tackle, and could read the game. Whenever I looked back and saw him, he was a reassuring figure at the heart of the defence.

CENTRE BACK: Paul McGrath

This guy is the best player I ever played with in any position. He was an outstanding player... a lovely man and a brilliant player. Nowadays, you would be talking about £40m for a player of his quality.

LEFT BACK: Mark Bowen

In the two years I was there (Norwich), he was probably the best player at the club. Mark was a very loyal player to Norwich... if he had have left them, I think he could have gone on to play for one of the very best teams. He had two unbelievably consistent seasons.

RIGHT MIDFIELD: Ray Houghton

Ray was again a top, top player - a tireless worker, a good footballer, and prepared to go on the outside of players if he could. He wasn't the quickest but he was brave - a very intelligent player and a good lad.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD: Roy Keane

I watched him develop into that menace he became, that real presence. He became such a driving force at the heart of United and he kicked on from there and was the main part of the team.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD: Paul Gascoigne

I never played with Gaz and saw the very best of him. I have put him in there because he was capable of doing things that would have never even occurred to me.

LEFT MIDFIELD: Dennis Wise

A great little player to have in your team. He wouldn't duck anything... he played every week, had good ability, and wasn't outstanding but if you knocked him down, he would get back up.

ATTACKING MIDFIELD: Paul Merson

Max Rushden: "No time to talk about Merse!"

STRIKER: Dwight Yorke

A very, very good, top player Yorkie. (I was) really choked when he left Villa, I can understand why - to go on to better things at United. A brilliant footballer, like Merse! He knew the game and was always able to bring his A-game to the party.
