Newcastle have recalled defender Mike Williamson from his loan spell with Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manager Steve McClaren has taken the decision after Jamaal Lascelles suffered a hamstring injury during Saturday's 5-1 defeat by Crystal Palace.

Williamson, who was due to remain at Molineux until January, has made five appearances for the club since his move south in October.

McClaren was extremely critical of his defence following their capitulation at Selhurst Park last weekend after taking an early lead against the Londoners.

The defeat followed a reported training-ground bust-up among players and coaching staff in the wake of Newcastle's 3-0 home defeat by Leicester the previous week.

Newcastle are currently second bottom in the Premier League, having conceded more goals than any other side, and host Liverpool at St James' Park on Super Sunday, live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 3.30pm.

Wolves manager Kenny Jackett brought Williamson into the club while Kortney Hause and Ethan Ebanks-Landell were out with injury.

Ebanks-Landell has now recovered from his broken foot but Hause remains out of action because a hamstring problem.

"We understand the situation and we thank Steve McClaren and Newcastle for letting us take him on loan," said Jackett.

"We thank Mike as well and since he has been here we have kept three clean sheets in five games, only conceding three goals, which is a good record.

"For us now we have Ethan Ebanks-Landell fit again who we think is a very promising centre back, who is ready."
