Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle could feature in Tuesday's top-of-the-table showdown with Brighton - three weeks earlier than previously thought.
Gayle suffered a hamstring injury in Monday night's 2-0 victory over Aston Villa and the initial prognosis was that United's top scorer would be out for a month.
But boss Rafa Benitez - speaking ahead of Saturday's Championship match with Bristol City - says the injury is not as bad as first feared, tests showing no serious damage.
Benitez added that he would not rule him out of Tuesday's eagerly-anticipated clash with the Seagulls, which is live on Sky Sports.
The match against Villa was Gayle's first start since initially injuring his hamstring at Brentford on January 14.
The former Crystal Palace man has scored 20 league goals this season.
