Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith questioned if Jonjo Shelvey’s sending off was the ‘most stupid red card ever’. Watch and decide for yourself…
The midfielder began the day as Newcastle's captain ahead of their Nissan Super Sunday clash with Tottenham, leading the Magpies out for their first match back in the Premier League.
But just minutes into the second half, he stamped on the ankle of Dele Alli while trying to retrieve the ball - despite referee Andre Marriner giving Spurs the free kick - and was subsequently shown a straight red card.
Smith - who was commentating on the game for Sky Sports - gave his instant reaction to the sending off, and he was scathing of the Newcastle man.
'Captain to clown in 10 seconds'
Graeme Souness says Jonjo Shelvey went 'from captain to clown in 10 seconds' after he was sent off.
"That has come as a shock to everyone in the stadium. It certainly has to me. Dele Alli thinks Shelvey's stepped on his ankle intentionally from his reaction," he said.
"Is that the most stupid red card you've ever seen in your life? Right under the referee's nose as well."
