Spanish striker Joselu has completed his Newcastle medical and personal terms have been agreed, Sky sources understand.
The Magpies are close to announcing the signing of the Stoke striker, in a transfer that will cost them in the region of £5m.
Joselu, 27, moved to the Potteries in the summer of 2015 for £5.75m from Hannover but scored just four goals in 27 appearances at the bet365 Stadium.
He spent last season on loan at Deportivo, scoring five goals in 20 league games.
The forward's addition would come as a welcome boost to manager Rafael Benitez on a day which saw the club confirm that defenders Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett will be sidelined by injury for several weeks.
Benitez has been vocal in recent weeks over the club's relative lack of transfer activity and, with owner Mike Ashley having admitted over the weekend that he will not be pouring millions of his own money into the club, fans fear last season's Sky Bet Championship winners could be left behind.
Around £31m has been invested in new signings to date with escalating transfer fees and wage demands having proved a problem for Newcastle.
The presence of several players on the books who are now surplus to requirements, but whom Newcastle have so far been unable to offload, have also proved stumbling blocks to Benitez's recruitment plans.
