The Teesside club had hoped to bring in the 18-year-old former Darlington forward on-loan until the end of the season, and link him up with fellow Magpie Paul Arnison at Victoria Park.
Pool manager Chris Turner said: "I am waiting on a call from Newcastle today to say whether or not we can take him on loan.
"Gordon Milne and Tommy Craig are talking to him today and they are keen for him to come here. If we can sign him by 3pm he will be on the bench tonight."
Unfortunately for Turner, the Scottish Premier League side appear to have hijacked the bid and are also hoping that he will sign for them. The only hope United have is, if Coppinger turns down the permanent move in favour of staying at St James` Park, then he will then move to Teesside on loan for the rest of the season.
