20-year-old Griffin played in the Newcastle reserve team that drew 2-2 with City reserves last week, setting up their second goal for David McMahon. The young left back also figured in the Tyneside club's Premiership victory over Tottenham Hotspur, coming on as a 74th minute substitute.
Now Royle is reportedly keen to take Griffin to Maine Road to bolster his flagging defence that has conceded eight goals in three games. However reports suggest that the City boss has already had a £3 million bid for the player turned down.
Having stripped Richard Edghill of the Citizens' captaincy, after he scored an own goal in the 2-1 loss to Coventry last week, Royle is believed to be keen to bring in extra cover at the back, and he may turn his attention to Griffin's team-mate Laurent Charvet, who recently turned down a £1.3 million move to Charlton.
