Coppinger has moved to Victoria Park on a temporary two-month deal after failing to break into Bobby Robson's first team plans.
The 21-year-old spent a similar period on loan with Chris Turner's men at the end of the 1999/00 season, and is in the squad for Saturday's clash with Rushden & Diamonds.
Turner moved for the former Darlington forward after he featured for The Magpies' reserves in a midweek friendly against their Hartlepool counterparts.
He set up three goals, prompting Turner to snap him up, and Coppinger reveals he is more than happy to rejoin the club.
"It's unbelievable. I don't think there's a happier man in the Football League to be honest," he told the club's official website.
"I'm looking forward to playing first team football, if selected on Saturday I'll be over the moon to be playing again.
"The lads here are great, and once I was part of Hartlepool United I always wanted to come back here.
"I enjoyed watching them when I came. It's great to be back here, I couldn't be happier."
