Magpies boss Bobby Robson is a big admirer of the England Under-21 international and was impressed with Konchesky's performance when the two sides locked horns at St James' Park a fortnight ago.
Robson is scouring for a talented, young left-sided defender and has been tracking Konchesky for months.
The speculation intimates that the 20-year-old could become a Magpie within 48 hours, with Newcastle fending off competition from Leeds for his signature.
Konchesky has made over 70 appearances for The Addicks and while manager Alan Curbishley will be reluctant to part company with the highly-rated defender, he may have little option.
Funds are still required for the rebuilding of The Valley, and the £5 million generated from the sale of Konchesky would ensure Curbishley is under no pressure to offload further members of his squad.
The full back, who can also play in midfield, has three years left on his contract and will be part of England's European Under-21 Championship squad in Switzerland later this month.
