With The Magpies willing to offer around £8 million, but the Dutch club apparently demanding £11 million, Milan's Ambrosini could be on his way to St James', as Robson considers other options.
However, with the transfer deadline ending on Saturday, any deal now would appear to be hurried and difficult to complete given the complexities involved.
Despite getting into the Italian national team, Milan could well be looking to offload players at the right price and Newcastle could face late competition from Chelsea, who have been credited with an interest in Ambrosini in the past.
Emerton would appear to have been targeted because of a lack of cover down the right, although such a versatile player could cover across a variety of positions.
Following their 1-0 loss to Manchester City at the weekend, Robson was criticised for his tactics that saw them torn apart despite playing five in midfield.
The lack of an imposing figure certainly hindered their progress and a move for either Emerton or Ambrosini would help matters in the centre of the park.
Meanwhile, former United midfielder Garry Brady is on trial at Dundee and looking to make a similar move as Temuri Ketsbaia did.
