Alan Shearer led the line superbly and was unlucky early on, with Gary Rowett making an impressive clearance.
Gary Speed hit the woodwork with a header from a Laurent Robert corner, and Jermaine Jenas volleyed wastefully wide after being set up by Nolberto Solano.
A mistake by Andy O'Brien allowed Shaun Bartlett to break the deadlock after half an hour, with his first goal since September 2001.
Griffin, a surprise scorer against Juventus, repeated the trick with a great shot that crashed in off the underside of the bar, following a tee-up by Shearer.
A second half winner was provided by Frenchman Robert when he lashed the ball past Kiely, after Shearer again helped set up the play with some excellent centre forward play, and Ameobi passed to the scorer.
Shola Ameobi scored with his hand, and picked up a booking for his troubles, and was denied by Kiely, while Robert headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
Bartlett had another chance for Charlton in the first half, as he was thwarted by Shay Given in a promising situation, with Jason Euell slipping from the rebound.
