Robson has a long-standing interest in Simao, who plays for Benfica, but it appears his policy of buying young English talent appears to have given him a different option.
When asked if he was still interested in the Portuguese international, Robson answered in the negative, adding that he thought Ambrose would more than justify his faith in him.
"We've bought English in Darren Ambrose and can play on the left or right," said Robson.
"You'll like him. He's only 19 but he's got great feet, a great brain and great vision.
"We've bought him to develop him, like Jermaine Jenas, and we got him at a good price.
"He'll be a fine player for us. He's right-footed but he can play left or right."
Ambrose was plucked from Ipswich Town for around £1 million, as The Magpies took advantage of the First Division side's financial plight.
Although he arrived after the deadline, Ambrose was somewhat surprisingly granted the right to play for Newcastle this year, with The FA adjudicating that the Premiership club had done Ipswich a favour in signing the player at a time when they needed money.
