NEGOTIATIONS have begun between Newcastle United and Benfica over the transfer of winger Simao Sabrosa to the Premiership side, Planetfootball.com can reveal.
The winger's agent, Jose Veiga, confirmed that the Lisbon-based giants had agreed to sell the former Barcelona star to try and ease their difficult financial situation.
Simao himself acknowledged that talks between the two clubs had commenced, but insisted he would only leave on his own terms.
"I know that there are negotiations, but the offer has not come through to me," said the 23-year-old.
"Newcastle are a good team and have always attracted me but I have to set down certain conditions.
"Benfica have to think about what is right for me, I will not leave at any price."
Veiga has communicated Benfica's demands to The Magpies, the Portuguese club are believed to want to recoup all of the £10 million they spent on the player last summer.
Simao, who has been watched by both Sir Bobby Robson and Newcastle scout Charlie Woods in recent times, is looking to secure a three-year contract offer from Newcastle.
However, Robson recently stated that while he admired Simao's abilities, he opted to sign the promising Darren Ambrose from Ipswich Town instead.
Benfica also revealed earlier month that talks had taken place, but talks had not gone well.
