Caig joined The Magpies on a short-term deal last January, but Sir Bobby Robson is keen to have him as cover for Shay Given and Steve Harper.
The former Hibernian shot-stopper revealed that he had been offered the chance to return to his old club Charlton, but that he rejected the offer to stay and fight for his place at Newcastle.
"Charlton spoke to my agent about me going back to The Valley where my former Carlisle manager Mervyn Day is head coach, but I wanted to stay at Newcastle," said Caig.
"Having been at Newcastle since March, I know just how good Shay Given and Steve Harper are and it is up to me to put them under pressure. I have decided to stay here and give it a go.
"While I would have liked a bit longer contract, Newcastle have promised me that they will review it early on.
"But it is up to me to impress the manager and show what I am capable of and get him to extend my contract."
Robson is a big fan of Caig and has no worries of his capabilities.
"We need a third keeper and that's why we have brought Tony here, in case anything happens to Shay Given or Steve Harper," said Robson.
"And I wouldn't be frightened to play him in the first team."
