Caldwell arrived at Pride Park on a two-month loan deal after both Youl Mawene and Dave Walton picked up knee injuries in pre-season.
Caldwell has done well for the club but Rams boss George Burley says that they will not be extending his stay due to his defenders recovering fitness.
"With Dave Walton and Youl Mawene getting close to fitness we've decided not to renew Gary Caldwell's loan," said Burley.
"Youl will get a taste of the action in the reserves at Coventry and David will be playing his second game back so things are improving for us a little at centre back.
"Gary has been here for two months and has done well for us in some difficult games
"In particular he played his part in the goalless draw at Gillingham and the win at Bradford and we wish him all the best in the future."
