Zola has spent the past two months at Boundary Park, scoring four goals in 11 appearances for Iain Dowie's side.
The Latics boss had been keen to hang on to the striker's services and, after a week of intense negotiations, has struck a deal with The Magpies.
Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson has decided it will be more beneficial for the 18-year-old to accrue first team experience in the Second Division for the remainder of the campaign.
Dowie was delighted to have thrashed out a deal with the Premiership club and is hoping Zola will continue his progress.
"It's very good news," Dowie told Oldham's official website. "There's been a lot of development.
"He's only 18 and he is improving all the time.
"It's important that when you are developing as a player you get to play games and that's what he's got here.
"We're very thankful to Sir Bobby Robson, John Carver and the rest of the staff at Newcastle for letting him stay with us and we hope that Calvin will go on to be a real threat for us this season."
