The defender is on the brink of severing his ties with Newcastle, after failing to prove himself to Sir Bobby Robson, and could soon be on the move north of the border.
Caldwell spent time on loan at Easter Road earlier in his career and admits he has always fancied having another crack at life in The SPL.
''I have been in talks with Newcastle for the past few days and I am trying to sort things out and see what is happening," he said. "I went on loan to Hibs a couple of years ago and played 11 games. I loved it at Easter Road and had a great time.
''They are a good club and I have always said I would jump at the chance to go back. There are just a few things that need to be tied up, then it could be done."
Caldwell has been aware for some time that he had no future on Tyneside.
''I am not sitting about here, kidding on I am a Newcastle player any longer," he added.
''I want to play first-team football. I would be delighted to play in The SPL again.
''When I was loan at Hibs, I was fortunate enough to be capped four times for my country.
''That showed me, that if you are playing first-team football and playing well, you will get your chance in the national set-up.
''I am getting to the stage where I want to be playing at the highest level. To do that I need to be playing club football.
''Hopefully, something can be done soon.''
