The Magpies are looking to bolster the right side of their defence and are known to be very keen on Tottenham's Steve Carr.
However, Sir Bobby Robson does not seem to be pinning all his hopes on landing the Irishman and has also been looking at other avenues.
Panathinaikos' Giourkas Seitaridis has also come under the gaze of Newcastle's scouts - who have now taken a keen interest in Frenchman Radet.
The 27-year-old has just over 12 months left on his current deal with the club and earlier this month confirmed his intent to move on.
Radet is very highly thought of within Le Championnat and was named in the managers' team of the season last year.
His exploits have been overshadowed in recent years by the likes of Phillipe Mexes and Jean-Alain Boumsong, but he could yet earn a big move.
Auxerre do not want to lose yet another one of their stars on a free - as Boumsong and Olivier Kapo are doing this summer - and a bid of around £1.5 million would almost certainly secure his signature.
Craig Hutchison is representing the player in England and although he would not confirm Newcastle's interest, he did state that a number clubs are looking at him.
"There is a great deal of interest in Radet, and a number of clubs have spoken to us about him," he told skysports.com.
"He is a great talent and it is well documented that he would like to move on.
"We will have to see what develops at the end of the season."
Fulham were interested in Radet, before Moritz Volz signed permanently and Bolton have also been impressed with him - but they may not be looking to pay any transfer fees this summer.
