Darren Byfield is leaving Sunderland after he was unable to reach an agreement with the Wearside club over a new contract.
The former Walsall striker impressed after joining The Black Cats towards the end of last season and added some fresh pace and impetus to Mick McCarthy's attack.
However, he missed out on the play-offs through injury and now seems destined to be playing his football elsewhere next term.
"I haven't spoken to Mick McCarthy or the club directly since the end of last season," said Byfield.
"I leave all that stuff to my agent.
"I want to sign for Sunderland but my agent's telling me there's no deal now.
"I'm in limbo really.
"If the contract's not on the table, we'll have to look around."
The PFA are believed to be looking into the situation as a two-year contract offer was withdrawn by Sunderland following complications involving discussions with his agent.
Local reports are now crediting Sunderland with an interest in signing Newcastle United's Michael Chopra on loan.
