The Magpies twice surrendered a lead but were lucky to escape with a point as they were under the cosh for long periods.
Souness feels it was vital for confidence that they avoided defeat on Boxing Day.
"The last thing we wanted was to come here and lose," he said. "We came here against a team who were positive and aggressive and we matched them for most of the day.
"We got ourselves in front and then conceded what we feel was a very poor goal from our part. We just knocked off at a vital time.
"We then got ourselves back in front but at the start of the second half we were penned in and they got the equaliser.
"I think we then regrouped and got through the rest of the game without too many problems.
"It was important for Newcastle. We are in a difficult period and we need to stick together and pull in the same direction.
"I feel it was important we came here and got something for confidence."
Once again, Souness was less than impressed with his side's defending, as he added: "We have been conceding poor goals and it was more of the same today.
"We feel the two goals could have been avoided."
Souness has a full treatment room and it was increased on Sunday with Patrick Kluivert and Shola Ameobi picking up knocks.
"Patrick has an ongoing hamstring problem," he added. "It has not gone again as such, but he felt it tighten so we have to be careful there and Shola has gone over on his shoulder which is not great news for us."
