Patrick Muller could be a target for Newcastle after cancelling his contract with Mallorca.Swiss international defender Patrick Muller has emerged as a target for Newcastle after cancelling his contract with Mallorca.
The 28-year-old centre back only joined the Islanders last summer after leaving French champions Lyon as a free agent.
However, he failed to command a regular starting berth at Estadio Son Moix and has made only five appearances all season.
He has not featured at all since the arrival of Hector Cuper at the club in early November, and has now reached an agreement to end his time in Spain.
French newspaper L'Equipe quotes the player as pinpointing "the lack of confidence of the coach" as the reason for his decision to quit the Islanders.
Newcastle boss Graeme Souness is keen to further strengthen his defence and the fact Muller would cost no fee is sure to appeal to The Magpies.
However, the stopper - who attracted interest from Tottenham last summer - is also thought to be a target for former club Lyon.
Meanwhile, Mallorca have sealed the loan capture of Argentine striker Bernardo Romeo.
The hit-man is out of favour at Hamburg and has been allowed to move by boss Thomas Doll.
Romeo will stay with the Islanders until the end of the current campaign whereupon the Spaniards will have an option to make the deal permanent.
