Surgery for Shola

Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi will undergo hip surgery in the summer.

Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi has revealed that he will play through the pain barrier for the remainder of the season before undergoing hip surgery in the summer.

The angular centre forward has produced some promising displays this term, but his efforts in the last month have been restricted by a hip injury.

He started alongside Alan Shearer in the Uefa Cup win over Sporting, despite having failed to train for the last three weeks.

Ameobi has revealed that he has been troubled by the complaint for the whole season and intends to go under the surgeon's knife in the summer, following a consultation with a specialist.

"The injury has been troubling me all season really, but I've seen a specialist and I think we've got to the bottom of it now," Ameobi told the club's website.

"He'll sort it out at the end of the season, which is good to know. No one really knew what was happening with it.

"Now we know and most likely I'll need surgery. It's my hip joint - the ball in the socket. It's chipped a bit and rubbing on the tendon. That's giving me the pain.

"They'll try and smooth it out at the end of the season. It's quite a long recovery, so it'll be in the summer."
