A jaded Shearer was pulled from the firing line by manager Graeme Souness and The Magpies promptly snapped their seven-game winless run with a 3-1 victory at Craven Cottage.
Ameobi is one of the players looking to fill the boots from Shearer in the long term at St James' Park and the gangly forward feels it was important the players proved they could play without the Magpies talisman.
"If we had lost the game, there would have been things said about Shearer not being involved but it is the manager's choice and he felt Alan needed a rest and the boys that have come in have shown that we can play without him," Ameobi told Sky Sports News.
"We have stuck together and it was a deserved victory.
"If Shearer plays or he doesn't I have to show I can do the job and I felt I got a lot of joy down the left and gave 110 percent.
"We all played well and I have to show I can play out there."
Ameobi believes youngsters Charles N'Zogbia, James Milner and Darren Ambrose covered themselves in glory at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.
"It has been a disappointing season for us away from home and this shows we can win convincingly away from home," he added. "I thought the boys out there were fantastic and worked well for each other and it was a promising away victory.
"The way we have had injuries has been incredible, the boys like Charles, James and Darren did well and did themselves no harm."
