Sporting star Rodolph Douala has told Middlesbrough he wants to stay in Portugal.Sporting Lisbon star Rodolph Douala has told Middlesbrough he wants to stay in Portugal.
The two clubs have been talking for a number of weeks, but have finally agreed terms on a deal worth around é¼6 million (£4 million).
Douala has previously stated that he would be keen on a move to England, but now feels his career would be best served by another campaign in Portugal.
"I would very much like to thank the coach of Middlesbrough [Steve McClaren] for showing an interest in signing me," Douala told Abola.
"It is a signal that my work is good but I do not want, at this moment, to play for Boro.
"On reflection, I am thinking only about helping Sporting. The championship is about to start and we want a great season."
Despite Douala's insistence, Portuguese and English sources are still stating that a deal will be concluded soon.
Sporting, too, are making plans for Douala's departure - should a move come about.
The Portuguese giants do not have the funds to bolster their squad at the moment and coach Jose Peseiro has already looked at ways to spend the Douala cash.
The two options he wants are Hugo Viana and Wender.
Newcastle midfielder Viana spent last season on loan at The Jose Alvalade and the Lisbon outfit would like a similar deal - although the English side are yet to agree to this.
The other target is Sporting Braga ace Wender.
The Brazilian left winger, would be a direct replacement for Douala, has impressed greatly over the past three season with Braga - who he joined from Naval - and he has bagged 23 goals in that time.
Sporting have opened talks with Braga and Newcastle, but they cannot do anything until the Douala situation is resolved.
