Glenn Roeder feels Newcastle have a bright chance of securing a place in Europe and believes the players will fight in the four remaining games.Newcastle came from behind to beat Wigan on Saturday and have a chance of sneaking into the Uefa Cup places.
Roeder was delighted with his side's efforts on Saturday and has been pleased with their commitment in the last month.
"It is the first time we have come back from a goal down for a long, long time," said Roeder. "So that is a good sign.
"I want the players to push on and take it one game at a time.
"They owe it to themselves and the fans, it would have been ridiculous to let the season drift away once over the 40-point mark.
"If you are going to be a winner in life you have to win every game that is put in front of you."
Roeder has revealed he had a chat with the players to ensure the focus was not shifted to the summer.
"We have made sure that will not happen by having a stiff talk with the lads," he added. "I must say they are a great bunch to work with as they listen, look at you in the eye when you are talking and then give you the response you want."
Newcastle lost Shola Ameobi and Lee Bowyer to injuries and Roeder had mixed news on the pair ahead of Monday's meeting with Sunderland.
"I think it is fair to say Lee will struggle," he said. "But Shola has a chance.
"He has a couple of teeth which are pointing in the wrong direction, but that can be rectified. I am sure with a gum-shield he will be out there on Monday afternoon.
"Unfortunately for Lee Bowyer, he had a tight hamstring before the game. Lee was confident he could get through, but that did not work out which is a shame."
Titus Bramble (pictured) netted Newcastle's second, sandwiching a brace from Alan Shearer, and Roeder was thrilled with the defender's display.
"He (Bramble) had a clear run and finished it with super technique and I thought it summed up Titus' day," declared Roeder. "I thought he was outstanding against a difficult opponent in Roberts and I thought he was well supported by Craig Moore."
