Martins to stay put

Obafemi Martins has pledged his future to Newcastle amid transfer speculation.

Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins has pledged his future to the club amid transfer speculation.

The 22-year-old Nigeria international has been linked to Arsenal, with boss Arsene Wenger a known admirer of the player, and rumours escalated that he would quit Tyneside after it emerged that he has a £13million get-out clause in his contract.

But Martins, who scored in Thursday night's 4-1 friendly victory over Celtic at St James' Park, has insisted he will not be going anywhere this summer although he will face stiff competition for his place in the starting line-up from Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Shola Ameobi, Andy Carroll and Albert Luque.

"I will keep my mouth shut. I am not going anywhere, I am still a Newcastle player," he told the Magpies' website.

"I am very, very happy here, so I am not going anywhere.

"I believe you need competition. We have many games to play, so everybody will have to play together."
