Striker savours 'happy day' after committing to St James' Park

Newcastle have confirmed Shola Ameobi has signed a new two-year extension at St James' Park. The striker, 29, is now under contract with the Premier League club until the summer of 2014. Ameobi made his Newcastle debut in 2000, having been with the club since he was 13, and has since played more than 300 games. Former captain Kevin Nolan left Tyneside earlier in the summer because he was not willing to accept a short-term contract, while Joey Barton's future remains unclear. But Ameobi told Newcastle's official website: "All I've ever wanted is to play for Newcastle United and it is a really happy day for me.

Terrific

"Newcastle is, and always will be, my club and I'm looking forward immensely to the next three years, beginning this Saturday with the new season-opener against Arsenal. "I would also like to thank the board and the manager for their continued support, which is very much appreciated." Ameobi has scored 70 goals for Newcastle and became a regular in the plans of manager Alan Pardew in the second half of last season following the sale of Andy Carroll. Pardew, who succeeded Chris Hughton last December, said: "We are delighted to have confirmed Shola's new contract. "He has done a terrific job for me since I've been at the club and he is also a great character to have around the place. It is important to have continuity, and keeping Shola on board helps us achieve that aim. "It is also great for the club that his younger brother Sammy is developing well and we hope he can go on to have a successful career at Newcastle."
