Williamson remains on track to return at the end of October

A fit-again Shola Ameobi is expected to return to Newcastle's squad for next weekend's match against Tottenham. A shoulder injury meant the striker missed the Magpies' win at Wolves and there had been reports he was facing a lengthy period on the sidelines. But Ameobi will be available when Spurs visit St James' Park next Sunday - which will be screened live on Sky Sports HD1 at 4pm - and his return to fitness comes as a boost in the wake of the possible ankle ligament damage suffered by French midfielder Yohan Cabaye while on international duty. "It's quite a clean bill of health and you're now at the stage where it's just fingers crossed with the international games. Hopefully they come through those games," Newcastle assistant boss John Carver told the Chronicle.

Happy

"Shola's had a good week with the fitness guys. We could have thrown him back into training, but we thought it'd be better to give him a good base. "He's had a solid week. He'll be back with the group on Monday for the build-up to Spurs." Newcastle have made an excellent start to the season and sit fourth in the Premier League, two places above Tottenham, following an unbeaten opening to their campaign. Boss Alan Pardew has achieved the promising beginning with a new-look team and he could receive further squad reinforcement at the end of October, when defender Mike Williamson is scheduled to return from the broken arm he suffered last May. Carver added: "Mike Williamson is coming along quite nicely. He seems happy with himself, he's doing a lot of hard work."
