Newcastle are sweating over the fitness of goalkeeper Tim Krul after he was forced to withdraw from the Netherlands squad with an elbow injury.

The 26-year-old injured the joint in training on Saturday ahead of the Dutch side’s European Qualifier against Iceland on Monday.

Krul, who is backup to first choice Jasper Cillessen, previously spent six weeks out of action with an elbow injury during the 2012-13 season and he has been sent home to Tyneside for further assessment.

It puts the keeper in doubt for Newcastle’s next Barclays Premier League clash at home to Leicester City on Saturday October 18.

Krul, who has six caps for his country, was on the bench on Friday as Netherlands came from behind to beat Kazakhstan 3-1 in Amsterdam.
